About the Company

SA Water is a successful, modern water utility wholly owned by the Government of South Australia. We employ more than 1,700 people across a broad range of disciplines who operate more than $14 billion worth of infrastructure to deliver essential water and sewerage services to more than 1.8 million South Australians.

We operate in a geographically and climatically diverse service area, with sites and locations from Ceduna through to Port Augusta, the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, across to the Riverland, down to Mount Gambier, and most places in between.

Our strength and expertise have been shaped by our history. For more than 165 years, South Australians have depended on us to innovate and deliver efficient and sustainable water services. With nationally and internationally recognised industry expertise, we’re focused on understanding and meeting our customers’ expectations.

As well as safely delivering smart and reliable services for our customers of today, we innovate to shape the water solutions of the future that will support thriving economies and healthy communities.

We are driven by our values; we value our people, we do work that matters, we keep it real, we know that our work has impact and we are future focussed. Staying true to our values ensures that we consistently deliver positive outcomes for all South Australians.

About the job

We are seeking two highly organised and outcome-driven Climate Change Specialists to support delivery of SA Water’s enterprise-wide climate strategy and the requirements of the South Australian Government approved Premier and Cabinet Circular – Climate Ready Government.

In this role, you will support program implementation, drive emissions reduction and climate risk management, and embed policies and procedures across the organisation. You will coordinate and support working groups and workshops, representing SA Water in key forums and partnerships to advance our net zero and adaptation goals.

These exciting opportunities are ideal for individuals with outstanding communication skills and the ability to influence and collaborate across a large organisation for impactful outcomes.

About Science and Strategy

The Science and Strategy group employs scientific approaches to address present and upcoming challenges. They execute a strategy driven by customer preferences to elevate the SA Water brand and position us for future success.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide strategic coordination and support across SA Water to implement the Climate Ready Government Program, including processes and strategies to manage opportunities and risks associated with climate resilience and carbon abatement approaches.
  • Implementing project plans, schedules, procurement, contractor and consultant management, monitoring and reporting.
  • Monitor, interpret and advise on national and state policy developments related to greenhouse gas emissions and climate adaptation
  • Collaborate with business units to embed climate risk management and support compliance with reporting obligations including the National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting Act 2007
  • Lead internal climate change planning processes, including emissions inventories, reporting, and adaptation strategies
  • Identify opportunities for carbon offsets and crediting mechanisms that support revenue generation and progress toward net zero targets
  • Represent SA Water in key working groups and external partnerships

Your success in this role will come from:

  • Tertiary qualification in science, sustainability, engineering, law, policy, or a related field — or equivalent experience.
  • Proven ability to develop climate change strategies, policies, and planning frameworks
  • A collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills and a proactive, solutions-focused approach
  • Strong knowledge of national and state greenhouse gas reporting and climate adaptation frameworks
  • An understanding of climate-related risks within the water industry context
  • Familiarity with renewable energy, energy efficiency, and energy recovery technologies
  • Experience writing clear, actionable procedures, guidelines, and reports
  • Skills in managing or maintaining greenhouse gas inventories
  • Experience interpreting and reporting on environmental performance, including energy and emissions data

We have 2 maximum term opportunities available – 12 months and 24 months.
