About the job  

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Engineer Materials, to provide expert technical support to our Engineering Solutions team. In this pivotal role, you will deliver advanced technical investigations, design reviews, audits, and advisory services across all aspects of water and wastewater infrastructure and standards.

You will act as a subject matter expert within the organisation, ensuring materials-related solutions meet performance, durability, and compliance requirements. Your work will support the delivery of safe, sustainable, and cost-effective infrastructure outcomes aligned with corporate and regulatory standards.

About the Person

The ideal candidate is an experienced and solutions-focused materials engineer with a deep understanding of materials science and cathodic protection in the context of large-scale water and wastewater infrastructure.  Additional Key Responsibilities are:

  • Experience driving effective Safety in Design practices across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring health and safety risks are eliminated or minimised across the asset lifecycle.
  • Extensive experience as a technical practitioner in materials engineering and cathodic protection, including delivering specialist investigations, technical audits, and engineering design advice for complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to champion and apply corporate technical standards and guidelines to ensure asset performance, compliance, and cost-effective outcomes. Experience in conducting audits and educating stakeholders to embed best practices.
  • Proven track record of contributing to a positive team environment by implementing leadership direction, participating in decision-making, and supporting knowledge-sharing through forums, training, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to assess new technologies and industry best practices, recommend adoption where beneficial, and initiate improvements that enhance performance, safety, and value across the Materials & Cathodic Protection discipline.
  • Skilled in engaging and consulting with internal and external stakeholders to ensure engineering outcomes align with customer and corporate expectations.

Your success in this role will come from: 

  • Qualification - Bachelor of Materials Science or equivalent.
  • Extensive relevant experience in the materials engineering space.
  • Assess and recommend appropriate materials for pipelines, structures, and water/wastewater assets.
  • Ensure material compatibility with water and wastewater quality, environmental conditions, and asset longevity.
  • Lead investigations into material or asset failures (e.g. pipe bursts, coating failures, concrete degradation).
  • Identify root causes and recommend corrective/preventative actions.
  • Contribute to asset management strategies from a materials perspective.
  • Provide expertise on corrosion protection systems and strategies.
