About the job  

Based in Berri, the Coordinator Bathymetric Services leads SA Water's specialist hydrographic surveying function within River Murray Operations. In this role, you'll coordinate bathymetric and hydrographic surveys across river systems, water storages and critical infrastructure, while providing day-to-day leadership and support to a small hydrographic services team. Your work will provide the data and insights needed to support asset management, maintenance planning and operational decision-making. This role combines technical expertise, field work, stakeholder engagement and team coordination, contributing to the sustainable management of South Australia's water resources.

The role involves regular field work, flexible hours as required, and occasional intra and interstate travel.

About the Person

You are an experienced hydrographic surveying professional who enjoys combining field work with data analysis and problem solving. Along with strong technical capability, you can provide day-to-day leadership, guidance and support while fostering a collaborative and safety-focused team environment. You can work autonomously, build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and deliver quality outcomes that support informed asset management and operational decision-making.

About Operations and Maintenance 

Operations and Maintenance (O&M) is where our essential services come to life. Our teams operate and maintain water and wastewater infrastructure right across South Australia, ensuring we continue to deliver services that communities rely on every day.

Within O&M, River Murray Operations is responsible for operating and maintaining critical River Murray infrastructure from the Barrages through to Lake Victoria. The team plays a key role in managing water delivery, maintaining river structures, supporting environmental outcomes, and ensuring the ongoing reliability of South Australia's water resources.

Working in River Murray Operations means undertaking hands-on, meaningful work in a unique operational environment. Team members support river operations, maintain critical infrastructure, respond to operational requirements, and solve real-world challenges. Depending on the role, this may include flexible hours, field-based work, on-call responsibilities, or weekend work.

Responsibilities for this role include:

• Coordinating hydrographic survey activities, providing day-to-day leadership and support to the Hydrographic Assistant, and ensuring resources, equipment and personnel are effectively deployed to meet operational requirements.
• Undertaking and overseeing bathymetric and hydrographic surveys across river systems, water storages, locks, weirs and other submerged infrastructure.
• Managing the collection, processing, analysis and reporting of hydrographic survey data.
• Interpreting survey results to support asset management, maintenance planning and operational decision-making.
• Maintaining hydrographic survey equipment, vessels and associated technology to ensure safe and reliable operations.
• Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal stakeholders, government agencies, customers, contractors and community groups.
• Delivering commercial hydrographic survey services and building relationships with external customers.
• Identifying and implementing improvements through emerging technologies, methodologies and best practice.
• Ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, marine and operational requirements.

Your success in this role will come from: 

• Experience providing leadership, guidance or supervision within a technical or operational environment.
• Demonstrated experience in hydrographic or surveying techniques and the use of modern electronic survey equipment.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and prepare clear, accurate reports.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Proven ability to work autonomously, make sound decisions and manage competing priorities.
• Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications and survey-related software.
• A strong understanding of boating safety requirements, marine regulations and safe work practices.
• A current Class C Driver's Licence and Boat Operator's Licence.

Desirable:

• Experience in hydrographic surveying, bathymetric mapping, asset inspections or related technical disciplines.
• Experience working with water infrastructure, waterways or environmental monitoring programs.
