About the job  

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Materials Engineer with industry experience to provide expert technical support to our Engineering Solutions team, with a strong focus on material science, durability engineering and corrosion science. This role is pivotal in delivering high-level technical investigations, condition assessments, , and advisory services across water and wastewater systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and long-term asset resilience.

About the Person

If you're passionate about engineering excellence and have a strong background in material science, durability engineering, and corrosion science then apply below. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide the technical support on Safety in Design (SiD) matters for the materials discipline team.
  • Conduct high-level technical investigations and condition assessments, of SA Water assets to ensure alignment with quality, safety, and budget objectives.
  • Act as a technical practitioner in the materials discipline, offering guidance on durability, corrosion, and material performance across water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Support the development, review, and implementation of SA Water’s technical standards and guidelines, ensuring they meet asset lifecycle requirements and deliver cost-effective, fit-for-purpose solutions.
  • Work effectively within multidisciplinary teams, actively contribute to materials discipline forums, and support the development of a shared knowledge base.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and industry best practices, providing recommendations for adoption where they offer clear benefits to infrastructure performance and safety.

Your success in this role will come from: 

  • Strong knowledge of material engineering practices relevant to the water industry, with a focus on durability planning, modelling, concrete and steel structures remediation.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Material or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent), with relevant industry experience.
  • Experience in technical investigations, condition assessment, , and auditing within water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Proven ability to deliver complex and critical engineering solutions in the materials discipline.
  • Experience in the development and auditing of technical standards and infrastructure guidelines.
  • Familiarity with welding, protective coatings, metallurgy, pipelines, and pressure vessels.
