About the job

This 12‑month maternity leave cover role offers an exciting opportunity to join the Trade Waste team as a Technical Support Officer. In this senior and largely self‑managed position, you will provide specialist technical advice and support operational improvements across Trade Waste and Network operations. You will be responsible for planning and prioritising your own workload, balancing office‑based project tasks with field investigations and customer‑focused activities. Key responsibilities include contributing to trade waste assessments, assisting with fault‑finding and investigative work, and providing technical input into capital projects as required.

In addition, your responsibilities will include:

  • Collection of trade waste data and calculation of performance against targets and KPI’s
  • Maintain databases containing trade waste data to assist in operational performance and targets review
  • Help solve operational problems, and lead investigations and field trials to identify strategies to optimise operations.
  • Investigations as required to assess impacts of trade waste discharge on performance of SA Water network and treatment assets, which may include sewer monitoring.
  • Effective communication, knowledge sharing, training, and provision of advice between key stakeholder groups
  • Regularly review process performance data and report findings

About Operations and Maintenance 

The Operations & Maintenance team oversees the management of our water, wastewater and River Murray activities and conducts operational control activities for a secure water supply. The team is responsible for both planned and unplanned maintenance activities, integrating corrective, preventive, predictive, and precision maintenance strategies. They aim to meet availability, performance, cost, and risk targets by leveraging technical asset maintenance and reliability expertise. Operations & Maintenance strives to deliver smart and reliable services to customers while enhancing overall operational efficiency.

About You

You thrive in a hands‑on, physical role and appreciate the variety that comes with working both in the field and at the office at the Happy Valley reservoir. You value managing your own days, balancing field investigations, customer interactions, and technical problem‑solving. You bring strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to work independently while still collaborating effectively with others. You’re motivated to tackle complex trade waste and network challenges head‑on and take pride in delivering practical, high‑quality outcomes in a dynamic environment.

Your success in this role will come from:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in a Science or Engineering based discipline or relevant demonstrated experience
  • Ability to establish and maintain sound interpersonal relationships with personnel at all levels
  • Ability to influence and impart knowledge to others including trade waste team members, key account managers and customers
  • Ability to work as part of a performance focussed team
  • High level of competency in Excel, Maximo and SCADA and ability to learn and adapt to new applications
  • Knowledge and experience with technologies and practices for trade waste management, wastewater networks and wastewater treatment
  • Ability to interpret the results of various laboratory analysis and other plant data to exercise initiative in implementing corrective procedures when necessary
  • Planning, execution and reporting of investigations in trade waste management, wastewater networks and wastewater treatment
