About the Job

As a Field Technician, you will play a vital hands-on role in operating and maintaining water and wastewater networks, ensuring the reliability of essential infrastructure in Port Pirie and Crystal Brook encompassing the surrounding regions. You’ll be responsible for critical repairs, fault responses, and preventative maintenance, working in varied conditions, including confined spaces, trenches, and all-weather environments.

This role involves civil construction, excavation, and system repairs, while also engaging directly with customers and the community as the face of SA Water. No two days are the same, offering variety, challenge, and opportunities to develop your expertise. 

About the Person

We’re looking for a practical, hands-on individual with experience in civil construction, plumbing, irrigation, or a similar field. A strong mechanical mindset, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety are essential.

You’ll be someone who:

  • Works well independently and within a team
  • Understands safe work practices for plant and heavy machinery
  • Is comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights
  • Has a customer-focused approach, representing SA Water professionally
  • Is willing to learn, adapt, and take on diverse tasks
  • Licenses for HC Truck, Excavator, Vacuum Truck, and Front-End Loader will be highly regarded.

About Operations and Maintenance

The Operations & Maintenance team oversees the management of our water, wastewater and River Murray activities and conducts operational control activities for a secure water supply. The team is responsible for both planned and unplanned maintenance activities, integrating corrective, preventive, predictive, and precision maintenance strategies. They aim to meet availability, performance, cost, and risk targets by leveraging technical asset maintenance and reliability expertise. Operations & Maintenance strives to deliver smart and reliable services to customers while enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Your responsibilities for this opportunity 

Fostering trust with our people, customers and community by providing expert advice and service that ensure we effectively communicate and engage audiences with our business strategy and its delivery across South Australia, every day. 

You will: 

  • Operate and maintain water and wastewater networks, performing critical repairs and scheduled maintenance
  • Conduct excavation, trench work, and land management tasks
  • Respond promptly to faults, breakdowns, and customer service requests
  • Work in confined spaces and at heights, adhering to safety protocols
  • Represent SA Water professionally when engaging with the community
  • Participate in on-call and overtime work as required

Your success in this role will come from: 

  • Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in a technical or field-based role.
  • Awareness of and adherence to WHS practices in both field.
  • A solid understanding of water industry services and operations, particularly those of SA Water.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • A mechanical mindset, with hands-on experience in plumbing, fitting, or irrigation (advantageous).
  • HR or HC, Front End Loader and Excavator licence desirable.

Standard hours: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, with on-call and overtime responsibilities (overtime rates apply).
