We employ more than 1,700 people across a broad range of disciplines who operate more than $14 billion worth of infrastructure to deliver essential water and sewerage services to more than 1.8 million South Australians.

We operate in a geographically and climatically diverse service area, with sites and locations from Ceduna through to Port Augusta, the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, across to the Riverland, down to Mount Gambier, and most places in between.

Our strength and expertise have been shaped by our history. For more than 165 years, South Australians have depended on us to innovate and deliver efficient and sustainable water services. With nationally and internationally recognised industry expertise, we’re focused on understanding and meeting our customers’ expectations.

About the job

As the Health, Safety and Assurance Adviser, you will provide client‑side WHS governance, oversight, and assurance across the Metro Growth capital delivery program. Working closely with the Health and Safety Manager, Metro Growth, you will ensure SA Water and its Principal Contractors effectively meet their WHS obligations, including risk management, compliance, safety leadership, and the delivery of robust WHS assurance programs.

You will be embedded within contractor delivery teams, partnering with them to create a strong and proactive safety culture while maintaining independence in your assurance function. This role is hands‑on, visible, and essential in supporting safe outcomes for our people, contractors, and the community.

About the Person

The ideal candidate holds a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (or a higher qualification) and is a proactive safety professional who brings strong WHS knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the confidence to influence without direct authority. You thrive in multi‑contractor environments, can interpret and apply WHS legislation effectively, and have the credibility to support and challenge stakeholders constructively.

About People and Safety

The People and Safety group are focused on ensuring workforce well-being and success through strategies such as talent attraction, diversity, and collaboration, while also prioritising health and safety efforts to prevent harm and promote overall well-being and career development.

In addition, your responsibilities will include:

Fostering trust with our people, customers and community by providing expert advice and service that ensure we effectively communicate and engage audiences with our business strategy and its delivery across South Australia, every day.

You will:

  • Provide WHS governance and support SA Water’s PCBU due diligence obligations.
  • Assure contractor WHS capability, mobilisation readiness, and ongoing compliance.
  • Deliver audits, inspections, and verification activities across project sites.
  • Oversee critical risks and high‑risk work to ensure strong and effective controls.
  • Support incident investigations and engagement with regulators as required.
  • Influence safety behaviours and leadership across contractor teams.
  • Identify trends, assess systemic risks, and contribute insights for continuous improvement.

Your success in this role will come from:

  • Excellent understanding of WHS legal obligations and risk management principles.
  • WHS Systems Audit Qualification or equivalent exposure and experience (preferred).
  • Minimum Cert IV qualification in WHS.
  • Excellent communication people skills and ability to lead and influence without authority and engage with regulators.
  • Understanding of safety culture and leadership in multi‑contractor environments.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in utilities, infrastructure, major projects or similar is desirable.
  • Cert IV in Training and Assessment and working knowledge of ISO Standards 45001 are desirable.
