We employ more than 1,700 people across a broad range of disciplines who operate more than $14 billion worth of infrastructure to deliver essential water and sewerage services to more than 1.8 million South Australians.

We operate in a geographically and climatically diverse service area, with sites and locations from Ceduna through to Port Augusta, the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, across to the Riverland, down to Mount Gambier, and most places in between.

Our strength and expertise have been shaped by our history. For more than 165 years, South Australians have depended on us to innovate and deliver efficient and sustainable water services. With nationally and internationally recognised industry expertise, we’re focused on understanding and meeting our customers’ expectations.

As well as safely delivering smart and reliable services for our customers of today, we innovate to shape the water solutions of the future that will support thriving economies and healthy communities.

We are driven by our values; we value our people, we do work that matters, we keep it real, we know that our work has impact, and we are future focussed. Staying true to our values ensures that we consistently deliver positive outcomes for all South Australians.

About the job

We are seeking an Insurance and Claims Officer to join our Legal, Insurance & Compliance team. This role plays a key part in supporting SA Water’s insurance program, ensuring effective management of claims, and recovering costs where SA Water infrastructure has been damaged by third parties.

You will assist the Manager Insurance and Claims to maintain appropriate insurance cover for SA Water’s business risks, ensure the efficient handling of all claims, and support the organisation in understanding and applying insurance processes. Your work will help protect SA Water’s assets, strengthen our risk management practices, and contribute to a consistent and customer‑focused claims experience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Manager Insurance and Claims to maintain appropriate insurance cover for SA Water’s business risks.
  • Ensuring all claims are identified, assessed and settled fairly, consistently and in alignment with SA Water’s customer‑first approach.
  • Managing the central insurance inbox and responding to enquiries with clarity and professionalism.
  • Investigating incidents, identifying responsible third parties and issuing demand letters to recover repair costs.
  • Supporting the Customer Response and Support team with technical advice on insurance and liability matters.
  • Maintaining accurate claims records and providing end‑of‑month financial and major claims reporting.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement by reviewing insurance and claims processes and identifying opportunities for simpler, more effective practices.
  • Building strong working relationships with councils, contractors, insurers, brokers and internal stakeholders.

Your success in this role will come from:

  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills — essential for supporting customers during challenging situations and collaborating across the organisation.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and negotiation, enabling you to manage sensitive claims and recovery discussions with confidence.
  • Extensive experience in insurance and claims management (highly desirable).
  • Strong analytical and investigative skills, with the ability to determine liability and assess risk.
  • A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset and the ability to work independently while contributing to team goals.
  • Knowledge of legal principles, legislation or government directions (desirable).
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications, or Affiliate/Associate membership with the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (desirable)
