About the Job

We are seeking a lock attendant to operate and maintain locks, weirs, fishways and floodplain structures, providing safe navigation through our river based structures, managing the river flow, collecting data and maintaining grounds and facilities.

The successful applicant will be required to live at the Lock where a house is provided for which rent is payable. Lock 6 is situated on the River Murray at Murtho in South Australia.

Applicants must be available to be rostered to work every second weekend.

About Operations and Maintenance

The Operations & Maintenance team oversees the management of our water, wastewater and River Murray activities and conducts operational control activities for a secure water supply. The team is responsible for both planned and unplanned maintenance activities, integrating corrective, preventive, predictive, and precision maintenance strategies. They aim to meet availability, performance, cost, and risk targets by leveraging technical asset maintenance and reliability expertise. Operations & Maintenance strives to deliver smart and reliable services to customers while enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Your responsibilities for this opportunity 

Fostering trust with our people, customers and community by providing expert advice and service that ensure we effectively communicate and engage audiences with our business strategy and its delivery across South Australia, every day. 

  • Ensuring safe public access to locks and facilities, providing river information, maintaining high service levels, resolving issues promptly, and building good relations with stakeholders.
  • Adhering to Health & Safety policies, participating in team activities, complying with asset management systems, and utilizing relevant systems and procedures.
  • Following environmental policies, assisting with fish movement monitoring, and maintaining environmental assets.
  • Help operate and maintain lock and weir structures, ensure safe navigation, manage river flow, collect data, inspect infrastructure, and assist with fishway operations and maintenance.

Your success in this role will come from: 

Essential:

  • Proven ability to use modern computer programs and reporting systems effectively
  • A current Driver’s Licence and White Card
  • Strong understanding of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), with the ability to identify and report hazards, near misses, and incidents
  • Competence in using electronic measuring devices, plant, equipment, and hand tools
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of river systems and experience with the operation of Locks, Weirs, and environmental water infrastructure
  • A Restricted Coxswain Certificate and valid Boat Licence
  • Certificate III in Water Operations or working towards it
  • Licences to operate a Crane Truck and Excavator 

Standard hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday

Rostered every second Weekend: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
